The Start of the Olympics
The Olympics began in the year 776BC as a religious celebration in honor of the Greek god Zeus. Originally, the olympics only had one event, the 200m dash; however, in years following they would add races of various lengths and additional events such as pentathlon. While today people of all genders and backgrounds enjoy watching the Olympics, originally married Greek women were not allowed to watch the Olympic games. The Ancient Greek Olympics would eventually come to an end, but the birth of the modern Olympics as we know them today began in 1896. Below are images of the Olympic stadium in Athens, Greece from 1896.
